Vacuum Stations and Vacuum Pumps Explosion Proof Motors for Harsh Environments
Explosion Proof Definitions and Requirements (Taken from National Electrical Code® – 2011 Edition)
Class, Division, Group
Description
Example
Class 1, Division 1, Group D |
Environment containing flammable gas, flammable liquid-produced vapor, or combustible liquid-produced vapor mixed with air that may burn or explode, having either a maximum experimental safe gap (MESG) value greater than 0.75 mm or a minimum igniting current ratio (MIC ratio) greater than 0.80. |
Propane
Class 1, Division 1, Groups C & D |
Environment containing flammable gas, flammable liquid-produced vapor, or combustible liquid-produced vapor mixed with air that may burn or explode, having either a maximum experimental safe gap (MESG) value greater than 0.45 mm and less than or equal to 0.75 mm or a minimum igniting current ratio (MIC ratio) greater than 0.40 and less than or equal to 0.80. |
Ethylene
AND Environment containing flammable gas, flammable liquid-produced vapor, or combustible liquid-produced vapor mixed with air that may burn or explode, having either a maximum experimental safe gap (MESG) value greater than 0.75 mm or a minimum igniting current ratio (MIC ratio) greater than 0.80. |
Propane
Class 2, Division 1, Groups F & G |
Environment containing combustible carbonaceous dusts that have more than 8 percent total entrapped volatiles or that have been sensitized by other materials so that they present an explosion hazard.
AND Environment containing combustible dusts not included in Groups E & F, including flour, grain, wood, plastic, and chemicals.
Coal, Carbon black, charcoal, and coke dusts
Note: In accordance with the NEC®, Explosion Proof units are only suitable for the groups for which they are specified. Because of the way Regenerative Vacuum Pumps operate, ANVER does not offer units that are approved for Group A, B, or E environments. Regenerative Pumps should not be used in these locations. Consult ANVER for details.
